Summary[]

Brenda punches out a bullying classmate, Todd, after he mocks her for being gay. Their physics teacher, Mr. Mallon, sends them both to detention. Brenda goes to the bathroom to smoke a cigarette and runs into a quiet classmate, Doris. Doris explains she heard about the incident with Todd and offers her fifty dollars if she will break her fingers. Brenda is taken aback by this request but before she can say anything Mr. Mallon comes in, berates her for smoking, and sends her back to the classroom.

After detention, Brenda gets Doris' home phone number from the school secretary. She calls, and Doris's mother answers. Brenda asks to talk to her, but she sternly tells her that Doris is practicing piano before hanging up.

Brenda decides to travel to Doris' house to see if she's okay. She knocks on the door, but receives no answer. Going inside, she finds the living room in disarray. The piano bench is broken and covered with urine, sheet music is ripped up, and there's a large blood puddle on the floor.

Doris appears from a nearby doorway, covered in blood and urine. Brenda asks her if she's okay, but before she can reply, Doris' mother crawls from the doorway with a knife protruding from her back. She begs Brenda for help but Doris pulls the knife out and stabs her mother repeatedly, calling her garbage, implying that her mother abused her and forced her to play piano for hours on end.

Brenda flees the house screaming and calls the police. As a paramedic expresses his disbelief at the crime, Doris is lead to a nearby police car. Before she gets in, she tells Brenda she should have broken her fingers when she had the chance.
