Summary[]

A girl has a best friend that she attends grade school with. The friend's grandmother lives on the same street as the girl and the pair usually walks to her house after school to play. The grandmother will sometimes buy them books or make them snacks.

The girl doesn't go over to the friend's house very often because her parents live far away and constantly fight. The friend finds solace in living with her grandmother, who is much more loving and caring. Eventually, she moves in with her full time. Things go well for a few months.

Gradually, the girl notices that she sees the grandmother less and less. The friend always insists that they play outside. Whenever the girl asks to play inside, the friend says her grandmother is tired and doesn't want to be disturbed. Sometimes the girl hears the grandmother calling to the friend from the house.

One day, the girl has to use the bathroom and insists that it's an emergency. The friend begrudgingly agrees and takes her inside. After she finishes, the girl notices that the grandmother's bedroom door is open, and can see her lying in the bed.

A few days later, the friend doesn't show up at school. The girl's mother picks her up and informs her that she won't be going to the grandmother's house anymore. It is reveled the grandmother died three weeks previously and that the friend was living in the house with her corpse because she didn't want to go back to her parents. The friend and her family move away and the girl never sees her again.

The girl is shaken by the facts of the story and recalls that when she went inside to use the bathroom, despite the fact that grandmother had been dead for weeks, she saw her smiling at her from the bed.
